When it comes to disco, slow moving House music and extraordinary dance cuts from the 80-ties, then its the boys from the Concorde Klub crew, who are doing the best job in presenting the style in Zagreb. Their monthly program is one of the places to be right now and has also been recognized across the borders of their hometown. This weekend Kelzo, Hrwo E and Savage are rocking one of the boat parties at the Garden Festival in Petrcane. Reason enough to find out more and to talk with Hrwo E, who also prepared this months mixtape.
M: You are playing with the Concorde guys on the Garden Festival next weekend. Excited? H: A little, I think I'm still not aware of that, but I know how good and crazy the boat parties are, I was there first year. I think in 2007.
M: I have to admit that I missed the boat parties every time. H: For me that's the best of Garden, folks are totally relaxed.
M: Those Brits are crazy! H: Yeah too crazy for me, I can't be relaxed like that, will try this year.
M: How did you meet Kelzo and Savage? H: I think Kelzo (Matija) first commented my mix on soundcloud, so I started to follow him there and after that we started to have more and more conversations over soundcloud. We realized that we have the same view on music. After that Kelzo introduced me to Savage (Tomo) and the rest is history (smiles).
M: Why Concorde? H: Good question. I think our first idea was “roller boogie”, but that looked to cheesy. So, we started to talk about something that sounds nice and catchy and Kelzo loves planes. We figured that when we are playing music, we feel like captains in a Concorde plain and you just have to relax and enjoy in our ride.
M: How would you describe the sound of the Concorde nights? H: Mainly disco. That's the first thing that's on my mind when you ask me that, second house.
M: What about techno? H: Techno! Hmmm... I don't like it to much... maybe Kelzo. Savage, I don't think so. Maybe it's there, but in really small doses
M: There must be a techno record you like, c'mon... H: Hmmmm... let me think, you got me there, I don't know... must really think about that... maybe something from Jeff or...
M: Jeff meaning Jeff Mills?
H: Yeah, but really, I wasn't into that part of house.
M: So what is house music to you? H: I thought there would be those type of questions, I was scared of that, because I don't love to say something like house music for me is this or that. How I feel it or don't feel it. House music for me is something that I can't describe, not just house, disco, hip hop or techno etc. For me that's something I don't know, I listen what I love and I love what I listen. Is this to complicated? I first heard house from my brother and than on the radio, it was Radio Cibona I think and I didn't know what it is, it was just something that got my attention and immediately started to love it. That's my first contact with music, old tapes of my brother and then radio.
M: Did you know any of the artists on those tapes or was is it just “that music” that got your attention? H: Just the music that got my attention... later on I started to buy tapes and got more from my friends when I started to train breakdance, that was the first serious contact with music.
M: Through dancing? H: Yes. So that means it was more like hip hop and old break stuff.
M: Are you still dancing? H: No that was only 2 years I think in high school, we had a place at Suvag in Ilica (Zagrebs longest street). I think that's gone now.
M: What was your favorite record for dancing at that time? H: First record on my mind is Planet Rock by Africa Bambaata, it was a lot of good stuff in that time, I think that were old stuff even then or something like Dance To The Drummers Beat from Herman Kelly.
M: Lets get back to the present, next season of Concorde. Any info on that? H: Next season will start after the occasional summer break. We don't have fixed plans, but we want to have Leri Ahel, better known as Mutant Disco. That's first what we must organize and then we'll see, I'm hoping we will have much more guests in next season. We will try to satisfy the crowd with our choice of guest DJ's.
M: Leri is a great guy, always supportive... H: Yeah Leri is the best, he promised that his first gig in Zagreb must be on Concorde Klub. I really admire him. Every 2 weeks he has a new set of 2 hours and every selection is better and better. I think I once asked Leri how much he worked on his show through the week and he answered it took him more then 24 hours to get it done.
M: What about your mix for us. Can you say a few words about for the end? H: I wanted to do a little happier mix for quite a while now, so I caught the opportunity and made a little faster disco mix, with old tunes and a couple of edits, that are worth listening, like the edits of Domes, who is doing great things right now. I hope you enjoy it and much respect for the things you guys at dot that spot do. Keep it up!
Well, well, well. Here is the tape. Enjoy the flight! Author: Marko
